If you use your vehicle for business, you can deduct your auto miles based on the IRS rates. The new 2018 rate is $0.545 per mile. Commuting miles are not deductible. The IRS will likely disallow auto deductions if they are not properly documented. You must keep a log of all of your business miles, which include for each date driven, the starting mileage, ending mileage, miles driven, and a note indicating where you went and why. There are apps that can help you with this documentation. For more information on transportation expenses see IRS Publication 463.
